This is a presentation I gave this afternoon at the Inaugural Mobile Web East Africa Conference 2010 here in Nairobi, Kenya. The title of the presentation in full is (When) Will mobile be adopted as the platform of choice for marketers in East Africa? The perspective of a leading Digital Agency (Dotsavvy) with regard to how they are preparing for the expansion of mobile, and why. You can download it here>

Mobile marketing has really taken off in mature mobile markets around the world, and is as yet unexploited in our market. It will be a very interesting market in 2010, with companies appreciating the changing consumer needs, and where to target that consumer.

what do you think will work best for our market; Mobile Apps with pre-loaded ads or SMS ad campaigns based on consumer profiles?

Angela, Thanks for your feedback. I think mobile apps will take time to catch on in Kenya/Africa. The focus should be on SMS and MMS as well we mobile web sites with value-added functionality.

From my experience making a website, less than 30% of my users are from the Mobile Web. So my opinion is, though Mobile Web is quite big in East Africa, browsing from computers is still the main way to surf.

Agreed. The PC Web is still the preferred browsing platform for those who have been online all along. Its the new markets like the rural and youth that are mobile web driven – they simply don’t have a choice. The mobile is their PC. Therefore, this market will grow.
