The Marketer’s AI Reckoning: What AI Really Changes About The Work, From The Brief To The Boardroom

Earlier this week on behalf of Moringa School I facilitated a webinar for marketers titled, ‘The Marketer’s AI Reckoning: What AI Really Changes About The Work, From The Brief To The Boardroom’. During the same, I made the compelling argument that AI is not just changing how fast marketers work. It is changing the work itself. That was the biggest takeaway of the whole session and here is what we covered:

Using AI Is No Longer the Advantage

Kenya has the highest AI adoption rate on earth. 97.5% of us used an AI tool in the past month, ahead of the UAE and well clear of the global average. This means that as a marketer your competitors are using the same AI models and tools you are and if this is the case then using AI is no longer a competitive advantage. It’s simply a starting point for everyone. So the question that matters is no longer whether you use AI. It is what you do with it that others cannot.

The Work Is Being Rewired, One Workstream at a Time

The heart of the session was a walk through the marketing workflow itself, from the brief to the boardroom, showing how each stage is changing.

  • Briefing: The brief used to be written from scratch, by hand, over days. Now it can be drafted from your own data in minutes, then refined by a human, and split by channel instantly. The re-briefing that used to delay every campaign start disappears.
  • Research: Weeks of manual digging become hours of synthesis. You point AI at your own reviews, your sales notes, your support tickets, and it finds the patterns. You still make the call on what they mean.
  • Content: Generated at volume, then edited for judgement. Speed is now cheap. The value moved to the edit, to the taste, to replacing every empty adjective with a fact.
  • Analytics & Reporting: This is the biggest change of all. Marketing is moving from looking back to looking ahead, from reports that describe what already happened to intelligence that predicts what happens next and recommends the fix. Strategy is moving upstream, before the spend.

The pattern is the same at every stage. The marketer has not been removed from the work. The marketer has moved up a level, from doing it to directing it. From executor to orchestrator.

The Gap Nobody Talks About

Here is the finding that should keep marketers awake at night. In BCG’s 2026 survey of 300 CMOs, 96% said AI is transforming their function. Only 32% had actually rebuilt their workflows to match. Most had simply bolted AI onto the old process, which is why so many teams feel busier without being better. Speed is not the same as advantage. If the strategy and the way of working around it do not change, you just produce mediocrity faster, and so does everyone else.

The Two Shifts That Change Everything

If prompting well is now the basics, what is the new edge? Two things.

The first is the move from prompt engineering to context engineering. A prompt is a sentence you type once and it is gone. Context is an asset you build once and reuse forever, your brand voice, your data, your positioning, your history, structured so the machine can actually use it. Gartner put it bluntly: context engineering is in, prompt engineering is out. Your brand knowledge just became your most valuable technical asset.

The second is the move from tools to teammates. AI is starting to do the work itself, chaining tasks, planning, executing, and reporting back. You stop operating a tool and start directing a teammate. WPP has built exactly this, a brand brain trained on a client’s data so that everything it produces is on-brand by design. Their CTO, Stefan Pretorius, put the question to rest plainly: AI shifts tasks, it does not destroy jobs.

What Stays Yours

None of this removes the marketer. It highlights what only a marketer can do. Strategy. Taste. Accountability. The judgement to know when the data is too thin to trust. The context that only you hold about your brand and your customer. As Kipp Bodnar, the CMO of HubSpot, puts it: the future of AI is not human versus AI. It is human with AI. The fundamentals were never what AI made obsolete. They are what it made valuable again.

What You Can Do Next As A Marketer

I closed the webinar the way Stefan Pretorius closed his own remarks, with the only advice that really matters. Start doing things right now. You cannot do this theoretically. You have to do it practically.

That is exactly why I am teaching the Digital Marketing with AI course with Moringa School where the second cohort begins on the 28th of September 2026 which is about ten days away, and registrations are still open. It is 6 sessions over 4 weeks, fully online, and roughly 70% of every session is you doing real marketing work with AI, not me talking at you. No coding and no AI background needed.

If the webinar clarified the questions, the course is where you build the answers. Places are limited and the start date is close, so if you have been circling this, now is the moment to commit.
