[New Podcast] The Digital Hospitality Reset: Insights from Strathmore University’s School of Tourism & Hospitality Digital Marketing & AI Roundtable
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in one of the most relevant and forward-looking conversations I’ve had in a while on the future of digital marketing and artificial intelligence (AI) in Kenya’s hospitality and tourism sectors.
Hosted at Strathmore University’s Microsoft Auditorium by the School of Tourism and Hospitality, the roundtable brought together industry leaders, marketers, technologists, academics — and a highly engaged audience. The theme was spot on: “Optimizing MarTech as a Strategic Tool for Business Success.” I was honoured to be both a panelist and a speaker during this important convening.
I was joined on the panel by Kevin Omondi (Founder of DotNext), Ronald Okumu (CEO of AI Connect), and Tony Muiruri, a hospitality veteran. The session was moderated by Joe Owako, who did a superb job in guiding a conversation that was both thought-provoking and brutally honest about where we are — and where we need to go.
Why This Conversation Mattered
The Kenyan hospitality industry is at a pivotal moment. Guest expectations are evolving rapidly. Operational margins are tighter than ever. And digital transformation is no longer a buzzword — it’s survival.
Yet, despite all the innovation happening globally, the uptake of AI and MarTech tools in local hospitality brands remains relatively slow and fragmented. That’s why this conversation wasn’t just timely — it was essential.
Key Takeaways from the Panel
1. AI Is a Game-Changer — But Only If You Know What to Do With It
Ronald Okumu set the tone with a compelling perspective: AI isn’t “nice to have” — it’s essential for revenue growth, cost reduction, and smarter operations. From AI-driven chatbots for instant bookings to predictive maintenance powered by real-time data, the possibilities are vast. But adoption still lags due to a lack of talent, infrastructure, and most critically, leadership buy-in.
2. Brand is the New Battleground
Kevin Omondi reminded us that in a market saturated with sameness, the brands that win are the ones that stand for something. With tools like AI making content creation cheaper and faster, brand differentiation will no longer come from who shouts the loudest — but who resonates the deepest. It’s about relevance, storytelling, and personalisation at scale.
3. CRM is Your New Front Desk
Tony Muiruri made a powerful case for Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems in hospitality. He spoke about building long-term relationships, not just transactions. He emphasized the need to track guest behaviours, preferences, and lifetime value — using AI-enhanced CRM platforms to move from reactive service to predictive engagement.
4. Marketing Agencies Must Evolve — or Die
As someone who runs a digital agency at Dotsavvy, I was candid: if you’re doing what you did three years ago, you’re already outdated. AI allows agencies to focus on strategic value rather than grunt work. The future is hybrid — where human creativity meets machine intelligence. And the agencies that survive will be those that embrace AI not just as a tool, but as a mindset.
5. Audience Engagement Was the Real Star of the Day
From creators calling out the lack of influencer investment by hotels, to marketers questioning legacy mindsets that prioritise billboards over TikToks — this wasn’t just a panel, it was a two-way dialogue. Real talk. Real frustration. Real opportunities.
One comment stood out from a hotel marketer: “We spend millions on conferencing, but can’t pay an influencer to attract younger guests?” That tension between traditional business models and modern consumer behaviour is exactly where the disruption lies.
Why This Episode Matters
I managed to capture the entire panel session as a live audio recording. The quality isn’t studio-grade — it was recorded on my phone — but the content is pure gold! The podcast episode is packed with practical insights, powerful questions, and lived experiences from people who are in the trenches of hospitality, marketing, and tech in Kenya. If you’re in the business of guest experiences, digital marketing, tourism strategy, or just passionate about how AI is reshaping industries — you need to hear this.
