Mobile Devices + Twitter Interactive Map Reveals Android’s Dominance in Kenya
I came across this really cool mapping tool today that tracks tweets from mobile devices using maps from all over the planet by mapping company Mapbox in conjunction with social media data aggregator GNIP. In looking at the maps from various towns, cities and suburbs across Kenya, one thing is certain, Google Android devices are by far the most popular. This is probably a no-brainer given the large number of low-cost Android mobile devices that have been on the market for the better part of the last 3 years or so?
On another note, surprisingly, it seems that iPhone’s and BlackBerries have an almost even split in spread where tweets are concerned in Kenya after Android devices. I would have expected BlackBerry mobile devices to be consistently more popular given their lower cost and higher penetration. This trend would suggest that probably a larger percentage of iPhone users in Kenya “tweet” as opposed to BlackBerry users. You have to give the interactive mapping tool a spin by going to this link here. Meanwhile, have a look at the screen grabs I was able to pull down based on various geographical search criteria for Kenya:

Traffic via Twitter is improving round the globe. As far as Kenya, I must say that the it is due to the dominance of android apps.
