Thin client solutions will help African organizations reduce their carbon footprint

Regional electronics solutions provider, Samsung Electronics East Africa, has joined hands with Information Technology solutions firm, Seven Seas Technologies to unveil a customised solution for local firms wishing to embrace the advantages of virtual business solutions. In a milestone association and first for Africa, Samsung Electronics East Africa and Seven Seas Technologies (SST) will spearhead the regional adoption of virtual workspaces through a strategic partnership geared at raising business efficiencies through server based computing also known as thin clients.

Speaking during the launch of the new partnership at an event presided by Information and Communications Permanent Secretary Dr Bitange Ndemo, Seven Seas Technologies Chief Executive Officer Mike Macharia and Samsung Electronics East Africa Business Leader Robert Ngeru confirmed that the partnership will provide a unified solution to help local clients reduce their operational costs. Samsung’s range of thin client solutions seamlessly LCD/LED display with a powerful thin client in one package and are well poised to seamlessly revolutionise the modern work environment as customers seek cost effective alternatives to desktop Personal Computers.

Server based computing is an increasingly popular alternative to having a desktop PC in every desk. Samsung thin client monitors combine a premium quality monitor with a built in thin client, offering cost savings, simpler maintenance and support. The new partnership between the two firms alongside solutions providers VMware, EMC, CISCO and The Virtual Computing Environment Company (VCE) will also herald the unveiling of thin client solutions in Kenya. Technically, thin client solutions relate to the use of a unified server system to network multiple access devices such as Personal Computers, Mobile phone and tablets.

“With this union between Seven Seas Technologies, Samsung Electronics and our other partners, we now well place to transform information technology delivery into virtual workstations, using best of breed solutions and technologies,” Macharia explained.
While acting as the Principal Information Systems architects, Seven Seas Technologies is tapping into Samsung’s range of combined PC and monitor solutions that combine premium quality LCD/LED monitor with a built-in thin client in one space-efficient unit.

According to Ngeru, Samsung has managed to combine a thin client CPU and network module, as well as monitor, speakers and adaptor into one single unit monitor to help boost business efficiency and environmental conservation. In the Samsung product line-up is also a Power over Ethernet Thin Client [POE] that does not require a separate power cable. “Server based computing is an increasingly popular alternative to having a desktop PC in every desk. Samsung thin client monitors combine a premium quality monitor with a built in thin client, offering cost savings, simpler maintenance andsupport,” Ngeru explained. And added: “Samsung’s integrated thin client solutions provide excellent performance and value for desktop virtualization customers.”

With Samsung thin client solutions, designed for commercial enterprises, education, healthcare, government, finance and retail sectors; each device comes complete with embedded Windows XPe or CE operating systems. This ensures perfect compatibility with Microsoft Windows Terminal Server. In addition the embedded browser enables the use of simpleInternet functions without having to connect to the server.
